With a bill of local stars, Wieuca and CDSM give fans a high-energy night of ATL music

On the Saturday before Thanksgiving, Atlanta showed up to support three of the most exciting local bands in the scene right now. The room was completely packed and the music was chaotic and loud. The evening started off with Janie Danger, whose brand of noisy raw punk resonated with the crowd. The audience quickly cleared a large space in front of the stage for moshing. Her music at times felt like a wall of sound, punctuated by poignant lyrics and a strong voice.

As CDSM (Celebrity Death Slot Machine) took the stage, I was unsure what to expect from them. The tight stage was completely filled with instruments: synthesizers, guitars, a saxophone, assorted percussion. There were far more instruments than the band has members. Each member of the band was dressed like they were going to a different event, from sports jerseys to slacks and suspenders. It all made sense when they started playing. The music was tight and synth-laden, with driving beats and punk lyrical themes. Three different people took vocal duties, two on drums, and what felt like everyone on synthesizers and guitars. It was like a dance on stage, watching them move from instrument to instrument under the lights. The room was completely captivated by the performance. This was an exciting hometown show from a band that just completed a world tour in support of their album Convertible Hearse.

Wieuca came on next to cap off their "Team Building" tour up the East coast, demonstrating why they are one of the must-see bands in the Atlanta music scene. The band was fronted by the charismatic Will Ingram with his white Epiphone double-neck guitar. He connected to the audience when he asked "Is anyone here certified to operate a forklift?" before going into their song "Forklift Certified Freak." The whole room sang along with "Man of the House," a more down-tempo song with a groove that's easy to get into. "The Whole World's Bitch" was a hit with the crowd, despite only being released recently. It was a sweaty, high-energy finish that felt like a well-earned victory lap for a band, and a scene, operating at its peak.
