REVIEW: Leif Vollebekk: Live at The Loft @ Center Stage - ATL

When it comes to singer/songwriters throughout the last 15 years of folk, Leif Vollebekk acts as one of “your favorite artist’s favorite artists." A Newport Folk Fest veteran and Juno Award nominee, Vollebekk took his Revelation Tour to The Loft @ Center Stage in Atlanta. In his time there, Leif gave an energetic performance, proving his skills as a showman.

While his setlist mainly focused on his new release, Revelation, the elevated versions of these tracks built an expansive sonic space throughout the packed crowd. Vollebekk finds ways to express himself throughout even the quietest moments of the night, and while his movements or crowd interaction would seem out of place in theory, it only enhances the message and passion in his show.

As I said earlier, Leif Vollebekk takes full advantage of his space, switching from piano and guitar song-to-song. There were even some moments of the night where he would go back-and-forth in a single song without missing a beat. It’s clear that Vollebekk loves what he does and is taking every part of the concert to the max whether it be at his most personal and revealing or through an impromptu tease of a Led Zeppelin cover.

Particular highlights of the night included “Rock and Roll,” “Moondog,” and “Surfer’s Journal,” all songs off his latest release. These all felt like tracks that he had longed to share with the audience, and while there was no lulls in the night, these performances stood out as some of my favorites.

Overall, Leif Vollebekk has rightfully earned his cult status in the indie-folk scene. A down-to-earth, personable artist with a dedicated fanbase, it’s no wonder why many flock to see his talent shine.
